Alba of PLF
Barn Name: Praline
Date of Birth: April 30, 2004
Breed: Registered Haflinger
Color: Flaxen Sorrel
Sex: Mare
Height: 14.1
Acquired: February 2020
Praline is small and driven. Her personality is much akin to Elle from "Legally Blonde" in that she is sweet and cute but also sharp and sassy.
Praline can be a handful to get ready for the ride but once you mount up she is probably the easiest horse in our barn. She is very willing, very brave, and VERY VERY fun. |

Aspen Skipping Stone
Barn Name: Aspen
Date of Birth: April 1, 2007
Breed: Registered ApHC Appaloosa & Colorado Ranger Horse
Color: Chestnut Leopard
Sex:
Mare
Height: 15.1hh
Acquired :
March 2012
Aspen is whimsical and feminine and is known for her absolute honesty towards her riders. With impeccable Appaloosa bloodlines she really represents her breed beautifully. Aspen does wonderful things both in the arena and out riding English or Western. An alert versatile mare, she is a favorite for hunter paces, endurance races or just a nice walk in the woods.
Because Aspen is a more sensitive and doesn't like drama, we tend to only use her for lessons or for smaller trail ride groups. She's one of those rare horses who really doesn't mind picking up the rear of a ride - not because she's slow (because she's not!) but mostly because she just doesn't getting stuck between a bunch of horses and would rather watch any drama unfold ahead of her and wait her turn for a drama free ride. |

Benjamin Franklin
Date of Birth: 2010
Breed: Paint x Belgian
Color: Flaxen Sorrel
Sex: Gelding
Height: 16.3hh
Acquired: November 29, 2022
Benji is a big bloke! He's a big mover and very athletic. He walks a bit too fast for the rest of the herd out there on trail but he makes an amazing trail and endurance mount for the taller members of our community.

Bonita Ponyta
Date of Birth: 2012
Breed: Haflinger Pony Cross
Color: Flaxen Sorrel
Sex: Mare
Height: 12.2hh
Acquired: April 14, 2015
Bonita is our pretty little pony! She is flashy, feisty and funny; but has a good heart and a sweet personality. You'll often see her in the fields at a full-on gallop outrunning those horses twice her size and turning on a dime.
Bonita has become quite the accomplished little equid in the past couple of years thanks to the devotion of Teresa Fico, our resident shorty who rides Bonita everywhere - literally everywhere. With the help of Teresa, Bonita has done endurance races, pony rides for children, dressage tests, all-day trail rides, and even taught children how to canter in summer camp!
Though an awesome pony and the world's greatest lead line pony for pony rides and doing great in lessons, she's still not ready to take first time kiddo riders out on the trail but based on the work she's done with the novice youth we know she's not far off. |

Brienne of Tarth
Date of Birth: 2002
Breed: PMU Percheron Cross
Color: Grey
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.3hh
Acquired: July 2015
Brienne of Tarth is named after the major character in "The Game of Thrones" books and television series. According to Wikipedia, the character is described as "loyal, stubborn, headstrong, and judgmental. Despite the repeated insults from knights, who mockingly call her 'Brienne the Beauty', she holds a simple idea of knighthood, believing that knights should be chivalrous and always honor their vows." A perfect description for this fantastic, oversize, powerhouse of a mare.
Brienne is a PMU rescue foal. After rescue she became a sort of pasture pet until finally taken on as a project mare at 8 years old. Her former trainer put a significant amount of time and resources into her dressage training and we are happy to be able to help Brienne go to the next level and diversify her career.
Over the years Brienne has become a stable in our lesson program teaching everyone from tiny little kids to our biggest and largest adults and even therapeutic students. Despite her size she's actually a surprisingly good jumper able to jump 1m fences! She's a hard worker and a good sport who likes working with everyone at every level.

Brumby
Date of Birth: 2005
Breed: Grade Appendix Quarter Horse
Color: Buckskin
Sex: Mare
Height: 14.2hh
Acquired: December 19, 2016
That's Brumby not Grumpy... we know they sound the same!!
Brumby is small of size but has a big heart. Rivers run deep with this little mare and she has tons of common sense to keep riders safe and just enough sass to keep everyone interested. She has fantastic gaits and an adorable jump. She insists that her rider be a good and honest leader in the arena and is a fantastic educator as a result. On trail she is drama free and reliable.
Brumby is one of Erika's personal favorites but she rarely gets to ride her because she's so popular. |

CA Beccan Kall
Barn Name: Beccan
Date of Birth: 3/31/2010
Breed: Arabian
Color: Bay
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.3
Acquired: February 2021
Beccan is a goobery sweet bloke with more energy than he know's what to do with. He's flamboyant and athletic but also doesn't really know where his feet are because they are just so far away.
He's a bit accident prone and has had a hard time keeping consistently in work, but when he is good to go he's really fun for the advanced riders. |

His favorite thing is people making decisions for him, or in lieu of people making choices he will just follow Tater. |

Dahlwhinnie's Scottish Bar
Barn Name: Whinnie
Date of Birth: May 29, 2023
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Color: Red Dun Tobiano
Sex: Mare
Height: Anticipated Height 14.3hh
Acquired: Born on Site
Whinnie is the daughter of Scotch and Vanzi, but really she's just 99% her mother. She looks like Scotch, acts like Scotch and we expect her to be a hard working little boss just like her mom!
Unfortunately in the spring of 2023 Whinnie cut her leg to the bone in a freak accident. With the help of our community and a GoFundMe we were able to get her to Cornell and we expect her to make a full recovery. |

Double My Scotch
Barn Name: Scotch
Date of Birth: April 14, 2004
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Color: Red Dun Tobiano
Sex: Mare
Height: 14.1hh
Acquired: March 2008
Scotch is a bubbly little squirt. She's adorable and sweet with a mind of her own and enough personality to fill the whole barn. Calm and unwavering, Scotch can conquer anything. She is great at working with children and adults equally and never fails to surprise us.
Scotch gave birth to a gorgeous palomino red dun foal in June 2010 by JKGS Awesome Desmond named Double Awesome Pixie Dust, now owned by Katie Steigerwalt, and in 2013 she had another foal, Bandit, who lives with one of our former students Robin Karlin in Missouri. In 2023 she had Whinnie who lives on site. |

Drizzle True Colors
Barn Name: Izzy
Date of Birth: 2013
Breed: Percheron x APHA
Color: Black Overo
Sex: Mare
Height: 16.0hh
Year Acquired: February 3, 2019
Izzy came to us from a friend who had brought her here to sell. Somehow by luck of the draw and a little chaos she actually ended up becoming one of ours instead of moving onwards!
This big mare is stoic and decently unflappable. She has a great rocking horse gate with a bunch of power without being excessively fast. She's calm, cool and collected.
As a larger horse she can seem intimidating to some but she is kind and careful. While she likes to hang back at the end of the line, don't let her fool you - she isn't lazy by any means!

GJR Get N Better
Barn Name: Xena
Date of Birth: July 7, 2004
Breed: Registered Arabian
Color: Bay
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.1hh
Acquired: January 10, 2017
RETIRED ON SITE
Xena is an Arabian mare from George Junior Republic (The William George Agency for Children's Services). As their programs shifted to half-drafts, the Arabians needed to be re-homed and we were lucky enough to have a home to off.
Despite Xena not having any riding experience prior to her arrival at Painted Bar Stables in December 2016, she is a quick learner and is eager to please. In her time at the barn she has learned a lot and is one of the most willing and responsive horses here.
However, despite her training, Xena has proven to be really particular about the way she is ridden and doesn’t like having a lot of people on her. When ridden by a lot of different people she becomes very tense and uncomfortable. As a result, she has become one of Erika’s personal horses and a go-to mount for our staff.
Though late to the game, Xena has really shone in endurance riding events. She has competed in a number of 30 mile races. She even placed top 10 among over 60 competitors during the Hope for Horses fundraiser 30 mile race during the National Championships in 2018. |

Gringolet des Étoile Solitaire
Barn Name: Gringo
Date of Birth: 2009
Breed: Grade Percheron
Color: Black
Sex: Gelding
Height: 16.1hh
Acquired: April 26, 2010
Gringo is an incredibly big but lovable and endearing giant. He is basically a giant black lab. He gets along with every horse and makes friends easily. He never minds that he gets all the largest riders. He willingly carries anyone big or small and will take them anywhere, English or Western. In Spring 2015 he took a first in English Pleasure at a local show and then placed strongly again in a dressage competition. He's happy, lucky and happy-go-lucky to boot!
Gringo is a very special boy and is lucky to have a large family of "god parents" who rescued him from a slaughter mill auction. Without Greg and Petra Tremblay, we would not have Gringo here at this farm. |

Hermione
Date of Birth: 2009
Breed: Registered Tennessee Walking Horse
Color: Chestnut
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.0hh
Acquired: 2019
Hermione is a sweet and introverted little mare who has woven her way through our barn in many different programs. She first came to Painted Bar Stables directly from an auction for training. Despite her sketchy past, she was brilliantly intelligent and a quick study and settled into her life as a riding horse.
She eventually was actually purchased by one of our boarders, Melissa Doak, who owns Piper. Her and Melissa were a great pair and it was awesome to see Hermione learning to trust someone so intimately! But in 2019, life got in the way of life and Melissa wasn't able to ride her nearly as much as she wanted and, worried about wasting her potential, offered her to us to use in our programs.
Now we are the owner of this incredibly smooth little gaited mare who is the same to ride if she's been ridden every day or once a year! |

Breed: Morgan x Belgian
Color: Bay
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.3hh
Acquired: December 2023

Joli's Hero
Barn Name: Hero
Date of Birth: 2009
Breed: OTTB Thoroughbred
Dam: Qena
Sire: Tenpins
Color: Chestnut
Sex: Gelding
Height: 16.0hh
Acquired: June 7, 2016
RETIRED ON SITE
Hero is the horse that Erika couldn't help herself from buying.
He is an athletic steed, powerful and athletic. He has gears that the other horses could never imagine! Yet at the same time he is a decently sensible and fantastic trail horse, especially for the slow speed trail rides.
If horses could be in the Autism spectrum, Hero might be one of them. Despite being a friendly guy, Hero’s personality is incredibly introverted. Sometimes you have to wonder if you even exist or if he’s looking right through you. Sometimes things that were fine yesterday are suddenly absolutely terrifying today. But just like similar humans, you realize that after years of working with him he actually does develop very deep and meaningful relationships with those who understand him.
You'll often see Erika on her Hero leading the rides. |
|
JKGS Awesome Desmond
Barn Name: Kasper
Date of Birth: May 15, 2007
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Color: Cremello Overo
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.2hh
Acquired: February 2009
Kasper is fun-loving and lovable. All he wants to do is have fun with his friends, both horse and human. Kasper likes his work as a trail horse and has proven himself to be a remarkably easy ride. He cheerfully carries novice clients, loves kids, and tries hard to please any rider.
Kasper has a contradictory personality of on the one hand being a grumpy teenager and on the other being the most willing and obedient horse in the barn. While slow to join the party and grumpy about getting the ball rolling, once he gets going he is an absolute pleasure to work with and one of the best mounts at the barn. He is really able to change his riding behavior to suit his rider, providing an amazing mix of safety and security and extreme adventure and participation.
Kasper is used on a lot of the EquiTravels and endurance adventures. He’s not remarkably keen on the endurance sport, so much work, but he always does incredibly well and is a perfect mount to introduce people to the sport! |

Meagan's Fire Storm
Barn Name: Firefly
Date of Birth: April 16, 2002
Breed: Registered IQHA Quarab (Paint/Arab Cross)
Color: Sorrel Tobiano Overo
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.2hh
Acquired: August 31, 2012
Fire is a flashy and lively horse with all of the moves to get him noticed. His assertive and confident personality puts him front and center and you'll often see Erika riding him.
Fire’s personality is best described as being similar to Mr. Darcy from Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ When you first walk into the room all you can do is remark on how good looking and handsome he is, but when you start to work with him all you can think about is what a giant arrogant jerk he can be. However, 8 months later suddenly you realize he is the love of your life and he never lets you down. But that he’s still an arrogant jerk.
He is responsive and sensitive, but not reactive, and capable of anything we put in front of him. He is a phenomenal lesson horse for anyone looking on really having a capable partner. He is an honest jumper and is a great teacher. His initial foundation in arena work is evident and his capability on trail endless.
Fire’s main sport has proven to be Limited Distance endurance races where he continually places in the top 10 (if not 1st!) in 25 and 30 mile endurance events. He is a competitive horse determined to win and never disappoints. |

Merlin's Beard
Barn Name: Merlin
Date of Birth: 2009
Breed: Belgian /Quarter Horse
Color: Chestnut
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.30hh
Acquired: December 3, 2016
Merlin is a stocky but nimble fella. He is kind and honest, a very responsive guy in both the arena and on trail. He's brave and doesn't spook at anything.
Despite his size, Merlin has proven to be an absolute MACHINE during endurance events. His large, ground covering road trot puts him strides ahead of the other horses and as long as you can keep him cool, he will go for miles. He routinely places top 10 in the 30 Mile events.

Mockingbird
Barn Name: Mo'
Date of Birth: July 28, 2019
Breed: Percheron Paint cross
Color: Smokey Black Tobiano
Sex: Mare
Height: Anticipated Height of 16hh
Acquired: Born on Site 2019
Mockingbird is the daughter of Mystique (percheron) and Sierra (paint). She is already proving to be worth her weight in gold. She has a fantastic disposition and is very easy to work with. Her behavior and training is already well beyond her years.
|
|
Mystique
Date of Birth: 2007
Breed: Percheron
Color: Black
Sex: Mare
Height: 16.1hh
Acquired: August 27, 2016
Mystique came to us in 2016 from an Auction. While in great physical condition, she had was very wary of people handling her feet and nervous of touch. Despite these fears she has always been kind and obedient and tries very hard. Coming from an Amish background, Mystique had only ever been used for driving, however she took to riding very quickly. She is athletic and powerful and we see her as having great potential.
In 2017 Mystique gave birth to Rogue, our little surprise baby. Rogue now lives with the Dew family nearby. In 2019 she gave birth to Mockingbird. |

Morgan le Fay
Barn Name: Fay
Date of Birth: 2017
Breed: Amish Mix: Morgan, Standardbred & Percheron
Color: Bay
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.3
Acquired: January 2021
Fay came to us from the Amish. She trotted "too slow" and broke into a canter while pulling the buggies -- but that canter is absolutely glorious to ride.
Fay is an incredibly versatile horse capable of ranking in the top 10 in the shorter distance endurance events but also taking beginners on trail.
She is a fan favorite in our barn among many students, despite the fact that she really doesn't understand why anyone would want to go in circles in the arena. |
|
Piglet
Barn Name: Amaranth Pigweed
Date of Birth: 2013
Breed: Grade Quarter Horse
Color: Palomino
Sex: Mare
Height: 1
Acquired: December 2023
Piglet came to us from a cowboy stockyard in Canada. She's lived a pretty rough life and has some scars to prove it. She's a bit nervous and jittyery, unsure how to make humans happy.
Once you get to know her and she "lets you in" she is one of the most endearing souls. She has an amazing kindness and not one mean bone in her body.
We are working with her to not have panic attacks. |

Rainbows Poco Spade
Barn Name: Poco
Date of Birth: 2007
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Color: Bay
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.1hh
Acquired: November 2014
Poco arrived here in the late fall of 2014 as an untrained young mare. In the years since she has become Erika’s go-to mare for any sort of distance riding or guiding.
Erika has competed in a number of endurance races with Poco consistently placing in the top 10 for both the 30 and 50 mile events. Despite being a quirky horse to ride, over time Poco has steadily progressed and we see her becoming an endurance riding program in the future.
Poco can best be described by her work ethic: determined, always ready, and unwavering. Her competitive spirit and drive to please her rider is always obvious and we see |

Smudge
Date of Birth: 2007
Breed: Grade Pony
Color: Sooty Buckskin Roan
Sex: Mare
Height: 13.0hh
Acquired: April 14, 2014
Smudge is a smudge. A mix of many different pony types, she is a woman all unto her own. She came to her occupation late in life but is quickly figuring out her role and endearing herself to everyone at the stables as a pony ride champion and lesson pony.
Smudge has become our go-to mount for smaller riders due to her perfect proportions. She is also a great mount for youth as she is very obedient and safe both in the trail and in the arena.
Despite her small stature and position as our go-to kid horse, Smudge has also become quite the accomplished endurance racer, competing in a number of 15, 25 and 30 mile races. Smudge consistently out-performs many full sized horses in these events and we are always impressed at her tenacity.
Unfortunately, over the years Smudge has had an up and down roller coaster when it comes to her eye heath. She is very susceptible to eye infections and over the years she has a lost a decent amount of her eyesight, particularly in her right eye. Yet despite all of this she continues to be a fantastic and safe horse. |

Spock the Mule
Barn Name: Spock
Date of Birth: 2008
Breed: Appaloosa Mule
Color: White
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.0hh
Acquired: February 17, 2012
RETIRED ON SITE
Spock is a mule. He's intelligent beyond belief, stubborn, confident, and opinionated; however, he is also endearing, sweet, good-intentioned, determined, and protective of himself and his rider. He is Erika's number one pick to be a half-ass trail guide! Spock got his name because like the character he is of two species. Spock is half Donkey (logical like a Vulcan) and half Horse (emotional like a Human). And he has pointy ears. |

Barn Name: Pirate
Date of Birth: July 9, 2012
Breed: Pinto
Color: Black Over
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.3hh
Acquired: July 29, 2024
We first met Pirate in 2020 when he came for trail specialty training. Since then he went to numerous barns ranging from barrel racing to hunt seat disciplines. He taught youth lessons for a year until his owner realized she just wasn't the right fit for him.
So we got lucky enough to own this fabulous flashy guy who settled in on day one. |

Sunnys Fools Gold
Barn Name: Lady
Date of Birth: May 10, 2013
Breed: APHA Solid Bred Paint
Color: Palomino
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.2hh
Acquired: Born on Site 2013
Lady is the daughter of Dutchess and Sierra. This pretty lass is a neat mix of stoic and sensitive with a mix of all of the traits of her parents.
Though she requires a soft hand and a thoughtful rider, Lady has also proven to be a very safe horse with a lot of tolerance when put into sticky situations. While requiring a more technical rider because of her sensitivity, she is one of the most reliable horses in the barn as she is willing to perform in almost any circumstance and is relatively fearless. She's a go-to guide horse on trail for many of the staff here at the barn.
Lady has competed in a number of 30 mile endurance events with both advanced and novice riders and has proven to be a metronome for pacing, keeping a consistent moderate speed throughout the entire event.
Despite her reliable and loving demeanor, Lady is a bit of a “princess and the pea” when it comes to saddle fit. She's very communicative with us about her needs and as a result the mix of her good disposition and low tolerance for problems she provides a unique opportunity for us to teach students on the importance of correct tack fit and riding technique. |

Sweet Tea
Date of Birth: 2017
Breed: Haflinger
Color: Sorrel
Sex: Gelding
Height: 14.1
Acquired: September 5, 2019
Sweet Tea is a young haflinger who I would best compare to Peter Pan. He's a very intelligent, well intentioned, good dispositioned guy with a mischievous streak. However, despite his moments of naughtiness, Sweet Tea doesn't have a mean bone in his body and has wonderful work ethic.
Sweet Tea came to us from the Amish community in Interlaken. Though a young buck, Sweet Tea is already trained to drive and ride (as is the Amish way) and just needs finishing up. Because he is still quite young we're giving him some time off, only playing with him on occasion. He's very brave and cooperative, already letting us throw a lasso off of him and doing walk trot work in the arena. We look forward to him joining the pony ranks!

|
Tater Tot
Barn Name: Tater
Date of Birth: 2004
Breed: Haflinger
Color: Sorrel
Sex: Gelding
Height: 14.2hh
Acquired: September 5, 2019
This giant potato came to us from the Amish community in Interlaken. Tater was advertised as "Broke for Grandpa" as he spent his life being the transportation for an elderly man, bringing him to and from church every week. Obviously that wasn't a ton of work because he was a bit on the hefty side when he arrived.
Despite being a driving horse, he is also very well trained for riding and easily jumped into our lesson program as the perfect bareback lesson horse. He has phenomenal work ethic, smooth honest gaits, and a will to please.
Tater Tot is a really sweet gentleman. When he first got here, he was a little aloof, but once he realized that humans like to spend time with him without requiring work he really blossomed.
In the field he's a bit of a Casanova and all of the ladies, particularly the pony ladies, really like him. He gets along with all personalities with his easy, go with the flow attitude.

Breed: Grade Appaloosa
Color: Bay Snowflake Blanket
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.2hh
Acquired: September 28, 2014
By now you have noticed the "Game of Thrones" theme. Winter gets her name from her snowy blanket spots. A sweet, gentle mare, Winter is always looking to please and is very friendly with both her human and horse companions. Winter's dream in life is to be a pack horse on a country western journey as she will follow any horse, as long as she doesn't have to go first. We are working on leadership skills.
You'll most often find Winter with Dan, as they have become close buds. |

Chip
Dog - German Shorthair Pointer
2012
Owned by Dan Salisbury
Chip is the glorious hunting dog you'll see in our backyard. He's energetic and full of love, but unfortunately you'll probably never see him outside his fenced in yard unless he's with his man, Dan because he likes to " point" at the cats. |
|
Cinque (as in the Italian No. 5)
Cat - American Shorthair
2019
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Cinque is a bit feral but comes out and says hi sometimes. You'll mostly see her with her step-dad, Dong, who has taken her under his wing.
Due is one of 6 kittens Erika rescued from under the dumpster at the Dandy Mini Mart next door. They all got fixed and good homes!
She is employed by King Dong as his FAVORITE proteges. |

Due (as in the Italian No. 2)
Cat - American Shorthair
2019
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Due is not a friendly kitty - she's shy and skittish and definitely feral. But she is an integral member of our barn and very helpful keeping rodent populations down.
Due is one of 6 kittens Erika rescued from under the dumpster at the Dandy Mini Mart next door. They all got fixed and good homes!
She is employed by King Dong as one of his proteges. |

Dong
Cat - American Longhair
2011
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Dong is the king of the barn. If you don’t know this already by his fantastic saunter as he approaches everyone who enters the arena, just ask him. He knows he is the boss around here.
Dong is exceptionally interested in humans and is quick to greet everyone who arrives. He is affectionate and loves to be pet. However, he’s also pretty good at being clear when enough is enough and he needs some space. |

Every barn needs a good black cat and Hansel is ours. Hansel is a VERY independent cat who wanders about all day but you can usually catch him in the barn at night. He loves to snuggle and is a fantastic "parrot," liking to sit on your shoulder as you go about your business. |

Mama Ding
Cat - American Longhair
2016
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Mama Ding may in fact be one of the most lovely cats in the barn. She is sweet, snuggly and oh so fancy!
But don't let looks fool her, she is an amazing mouser.

|
Sparky
Cat - American Longhair
2009
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Sparky is one of our original cats. The son of our former cat, Scrappy, he inherited a beautiful "mew" complete with vibrato. He is a great guy, but more importantly
a great role model to the other cats in the barn. He is a superb mouser. We have witnessed him catch a starling clean out of the air as he jumped from rafter to rafter in the barn. He is incredibly friendly and affectionate but he comes to you on his own terms. |

Sultani SS
Barn Name: Nymeria
Date of Birth: June 30, 2004
Breed: Registered Arabian
Color: Chestnut
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.0hh
Acquired: January 10, 2017
RETIRED to AUTUMN LUCAS
Xena is an Arabian mare from George Junior Republic (The William George Agency for Children's Services). As their programs shifted to half-drafts, the Arabians needed to be re-homed and we were lucky enough to have a home to offer.
Nymeria is a kind and true little Arabian. She does her job admirably and is a pleasure to spend time with. She is the backbone of our endurance and competitive trail program as well as our intermediate lesson students, but we see her making appearances on the trails for more advanced riders as well.
Nymeria is named after a fabled "warrior queen" in the Game of Thrones (who Arya named her direwolf after). In the tale, Nymeria was but a skilled general, commander and keenest military strategist. |
|
Kournikova SF
Barn Name: Kova
Date of Birth: July 4, 2010
Breed: Russian Arabian
Color: Gray
Sex: Mare
Height: 14.2
Acquired: September 2021
Kova came to us relatively feral. In fact one of our first memories at the barn with Kova was an epic chasedown when she got loose and ran into the National Forest.
Over the months and years to follow Kova taught us all about subtlety, boundaries and patience. She blossomed into an endearing and hard trying little mare.
Unfortunately Kova suffered an accident and fractured her leg and had to be put down. |

NASCAR For The Gold
Barn Name: NASCAR
Date of Birth: June 6, 2014
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Dam: Miss Zanolena
Sire: Sierras All The Gold
Color: Sooty Buckskin Tobiano
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.1hh
Acquired: Born on Site 2014
NASCAR shows signs of having some of the best characteristics or her mother, Lena, and her sire, Sierra. Nascar has a quiet and affectionate disposition, but rivers run deep and she definitely has a lot of feelings beneath the surface. She is normally very go-with-the-flow but when something bothers her or hurts she is quick to point it out and request it be changed.
Despite having a speedy barrel racing mother, Nascar has clearly and obviously decided on a slower lifestyle. She is definitely more on the energy efficient style and lacks a bit of work ethic, however despite that she is becoming a truly wonderful mount. She has incredibly smooth gaits and was really growing into a phenomenal mount.
Unfortunatley Nascar fell on the ice in 2020 and fractured her hock. She underwent surgery in early 2021.
Unfortunately she never made a full recovery from her injury and as her lameness became worse we had to make the hard decision to put her down. |
|
Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Barn Name: Crunch
Date of Birth: _____
Breed: Grade Quarter Horse
Color: Bay
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.0
Acquired: December 2021
Crunch came to us in a rescue state. She is sweet and endearing and loves kids.
Unfortunately Crunch never was 100% sound and upon veterinary inspection it turned out that she had a severe infection in her coffin bone that would be incredibly hard to resolve. We had to make the hard decision to put her down. |
|
Seneca
Dog - Beagle Blue Heeler mix
2006 - 2022
Owned by Erika Eckstrom
Seneca is Erika's beagle dog. "Super Sen" is usually the first thing you hear when you come to our stables because she likes to make sure everyone knows you have arrived. Though she's got a great beagle howl, she's actually very shy and timid. She's a bit skeptical of new people and it takes a bit of time for her to warm up, so she'll probably avoid you and keep a good 20' buffer between herself and anyone new. That said, she is super sweet, really cuddly and absolutely playful. She is Erika's perfect sidekick, acting like a satellite orbiting around her as Erika does chores, guides rides, and even sits at the computer editing this website. |
|

|
Frigga
Barn Name: Frigg
Date of Birth: _____
Breed: Belgian
Color: Flaxen Sorrel
Sex: Mare

Unfortunately Frigga started having repeatedsiezures and for her own safety we needed to put her down |
|
Sierras All The Gold
Barn Name: Sierra
Date of Birth: April 16, 2002
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Color: Perlino Tobiano
Sex: Stallion
Height: 15.2hh
Year Acquired: March, 2008
Sierra is our stallion, and he's quite a stud. A beautiful man with a peaceful temperament and calm demeanor, Sierra is a fast learner and a hard worker. He seems to pass his great personality onto his offspring, not to mention his light color!
Sierra unfortunately cannot live with the herd (we just don’t need that many babies!) so you’ll see him in his own paddock either living with his girlfriend of the year or with Captain Tubbington, his pet Jersey steer.
Prior to being owned by Erika, Sierra trekked through the mountains of Colorado. While there, he cleanly broke the navicular bone in a front hoof. While it will never heal enough for him to run barrels or jump, he enjoys the occasional trail ride with Erika.
Sierra is surprisingly calm and safe to be around even though he is a stallion. While we need to take extra precautions because he is still intact, he is incredibly affectionate and really appreciates attention. Because he isn’t on the trail string or in the lesson program people tend to ignore him but he loves it when people visit to groom him.
As he aged, Sierra's feet became sore and he started having respiratory issues. We made the kind choice to put him down. |
|
Duckworth's True Grit
Barn Name: Ducky
Date of Birth: August 26, 2016
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Dam: Maximum Review
Sire: Sierra's All The Gold
Color: Buckskin Tobiano
Sex: Mare
Height: still growing, anticipated height of 15.0hh
Acquired: Born on Site 2016
RETIRED to KELLY NYGREN
Ducky is her mother's child. Brilliantly smart, fast as a lightning bolt, sassy and strong willed, Ducky lives up to her name and has true grit. She's going to be a handful, but I bet she will, just like her mother Maxie, always come through.
Ducky went to SUNY Morrisville in the fall of 2019 to participate in their Western Training Program. Unfortunately while there she "popped a splint" which has never fully healed.
Mister is retired off site keeping Dutchess company at her with Kelly Nygren. |
|
Sierra Mist PocoTwist
Barn Name: Mister
Date of Birth: June 15, 2009
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Dam: Pepsi Pocos Leo Dandy
Sire: Sierras All The Gold
Color: Isabella Palomino Tobiano
Sex: Gelding
Height: 16.0hh
RETIRED to KELLY NYGREN
Mister is a really easy guy to work with. Just like his momma, Pepsi, nothing seems to faze him and he has his daddy's gentle and kind soul. He is a smooth pleasant ride. He is strong and willing on a fast-paced all-day trail, but also more than happy with just an hour’s stroll through the woods and across the creek.
Mister was a rising star here at Painted Bar Stables and became a fan favorite, despite his youth. Unfortunately he has an inverted palmer angle in his coffin bone and can only do light riding.
Mister is retired off site keeping Dutchess company at her with Kelly Nygren. |
|
Bachelor Foolish Blonde
Barn Name: Dutchess
Date of Birth: April 1, 1999
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Color: Solid Palomino
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.3hh
Acquired January 2009
RETIRED to KELLY NYGREN
Dutchess is one of our longstanding members of our community. She's been with us since 2009. She's a bit more of an Alpha mare. Thus, she likes to either be in the very front leading the way or in the very back making sure no horse is left behind. She doesn't take any funny business and doesn't give any back. She just loves going on long trail rides. You'll notice that before each trail ride she gets a bit antsy - she's just ready to get to work! And once she gets underway she settles down into pace and can go all day.
Dutch is also a fantastic and willing lesson horse, teaching children, adults and seniors how to ride beautifully in either English or Western styles. On trails, she combines lively energy with calm good sense and reliability.
Dutchess is the mother of Lady (2013) and Einstein (2016) |

A giant lovable fellow. |

Thor's Golden Hammer
Barn Name: Thor
Date of Birth: July 13,2015
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Dam: Tourmaline Crystal
Sire: Sierras All The Gold
Color: Solid Palomino
Sex: Stallion (to be gelded)
Height: 15.3hh
Acquired: Born on Site 2015
RETIRED to ANWAY FAMILY
Thor is the baby of Crystal and Sierra. He spends most of his time lounging and going with the flow. He is a calm, friendly and absolutely stunning fella.
Thor has always been well beyond his years. At only 4 years of age he already had been guiding trail rides for the public, teaching lessons to all levels of riders and even competed in a 15 mile introductory endurance race with a novice!
Though he did well at the short distance endurance rides, his real strength lies in his easy disposition and ability to work with beginner riders, building confidence and teaching finesse with an exorbitant amount of forgiveness.
As a sensitive guy, we decided he wasn't made for the public life after a couple years of working and we reached out to our community to find him a devoted owner who could give him the coddling and love that he needed.
Thor now lives in Wisconsin with his new owner |

Cat's Got Chrome
Barn Name: Captain
Date of Birth: January 12, 2000
Breed: Registered Tennessee Walking Horse
Color: Black Tobiano Overo
Sex: Gelding
Height: 14.3
Acquired: 2014
Captain was retired through
RETIREMENT ADOPTION PROGRAM to Jes Seaver
Captain is a motivated, honest friend. Captain came to us from a local horseman who used to travel to different trail sites every weekend and go on solo adventures. Captain has many miles under his belt and a good head on his shoulders. Because he is gaited, he has a smooth way of moving and big, forward walk. |
|
Captain Tubbington
Barn Name: Tubby, C-Tubbs
Date of Birth: 2014
Breed: Jersey x Hereford Cattle
Sex: Steer
Acquired: May, 2014
Captain Tubbington was purchased alongside a number of other calves in 2014 to be raised for beef. Needless to say, he never was turned into hamburger – he was just too amazing and cute.
Tubby has since been incorporated into our herd. When not in the stud paddock keeping Sierra company whenever he is lonely, Tubby is out in the herd hanging with the big boys. Surprisingly he is closest friends with the alphas of our gang!
But eating hay and babysitting isn’t all he does! We actually have ridden Tubby a bit – although he does seem to have a momentum problem. He keeps laying down whenever we are walking somewhere! |
|
Blonde Bombpsychell
Barn Name: Valkyrie or Vally
Date of Birth: June 7, 2007
Breed: Registered Arabian Horse Association Quarab
Sire: Magnum Psyche
Color: Palomino
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.1hh
Acquired: June 17th, 2019
RETIRED
This half-Arabian mare comes with quite the resumé. She has won multiple Regional Championship and National Championship awards as well as a Supreme Legion of Honor award from the Arabian Association. She has extensive arena experience in Western and English pleasure classes as well as in hand and over cross rails and fences which we have brought into our lesson program.
On the trails she is a fabulous leader, but is still figuring out how to pace herself in the rear to with some of our slower horses in the herd.
While we have high hopes for her in endurance, some arthritis in her hind end may keep her to some of the shorter athletics in our programs.

|
Pepsi Poco LeoDandy
Barn Name: Pepsi
Date of Birth: September 1, 1998
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Color: Black Tobiano
Sex: Mare
Height: 14.3hh
Acquired: March 2008
Little Pepsi used to be a pro-mama because of her great Pepsi Poco bloodlines but now is Erika's go-to-girl. Pepsi is the one that first-time riders, small kids and fearful individuals usually get to ride. She is tolerant, sweet and even tempered.
We often joke that Pepsi is our "Eeyore." She has an "if it's going to happen, it's going to happen to me" demeanor and has absolutely no sense of humor. However, don't let looks deceive you: real rivers run deep. Underneath her tolerant and stone-like shell is a very sensitive, feminine and independent lady waiting for you to meet her.
Pepsi is the mother to Mister, a rock star in his own right and now lives with Tristin Rose-Morley, and to her 2014 foal, SodaPop, who now lives in the Rochester area.
Pepsi underwent Colic Surgery in 2020 with the support of a wide extended network of individuals contributing to her care and the cost of her surgery. Unfortunately in 2021 she relapsed and suffered another colic. After a week of intensive care she was unable to recover and we made the choice to put her to rest. |

Maximum Review
Barn Name: Maxie
Date of Birth: March 1, 1998
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Color: Bay Tobiano Overo
Sex: Mare
Height: 15.3hh
Acquired: November 2008
Maxie was, for several years, one of our most valuable players, here at the barn. A flashy looking girl, she was a great lesson and unwavering trail horse. She did everything whole-heartedly, whether it was rough terrain trail riding or jumping over fences on hunter pace courses. Though she is great with beginners, she was also one of the fastest horses in our barns.
Maxie retired from trail work in 2015 due to arthritic problems and is now only teaching beginner level child lessons.
Maxie is the mother of Cola/Mocha (2012) now owned by Kelsey Eliot) and Ducky (2016)
Maxie passed away on the farm in the fall of 2020. She had been suffering from dehabilitating arthritis. |

Stetson was one of Dan's favorite personal horses.
He passed away in 2020 after suffering from dehabilitating arthrtitis and chronic cough. |

You want to bulldoze through the honeysuckle, okie dok! You want to ford a creek, button up here we go!
He has competed in 15 and 30 mile limited distance endurance events and didn’t even blink. He will trot for days, has both leads at the canter and has good work ethic. Golden Firewater
Barn Name: Apple or Apollonia
Date of Birth: May 4, 2013
Breed: Registered APHA Paint
Sire: Sierra's All The Gold
Color: Buckskin Tobiano
Sex: Mare
Height: still growing, anticipated height of 15.1hh
SOLD
Apple is the daughter of our stallion, Sierra. When the owner of her dam rejected her as a filly because of her "parrot mouth" overbite, we drove to Ohio to get her and have never regretted it. We renamed her "Apollonia," the patron saint of dentistry and with extreme dentistry care we see some improvement in the correction of her overbite.
Apple has made a strong start with ground training and will be moving toward assuming her role as a working trail horse. She willing to please and has a good honest attitude. |

He has a rocking horse canter and a steady trot helping people get the opportunity to develop muscle memory while he chugs around the arena. He understands dressage moves, jumps beautifully and is steadfast on trails and hunter pace courses.
While great on trail with advanced riders, Bear is a bit more forward out in the wilderness. He likes to go first! |

Crystal is a beautiful and gentle solid black American Paint Horse mare. She joined us from the Arcangeli Farm and has since made a strong impact on our riders. Her gentle finesse, as well as her motivation to please has quickly made her a fan favorite.
Unfortunately, due to an arthritic fracture, Crystal can no longer be used for the rough and tumble adventures; however, Crystal is still able to do some wonderful lessons for young kids and is one of our most valuable broodmares.

Owned by Everyone in the Barn
BB8 is the tiny little orange kitty that "don't care". He loves being picked up, carried, smushed and cuddled. She will be purring all the while!
R2D2 is BB8's larger but not older brother. This Grey and White sweetheart has outgrown her by far but still retains a lot of that kitten loving that makes her sister so popular! |

|
Cat D9 Dozer
Barn Name: Dozer
Date of Birth: 1999
Breed: Kentucky Mountain Horse
Color: Chestnut
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.1hh
The best part about Dozer is that he is really smart, you'll actively have to try to fall off. the worst part about Dozer is that he is really smart. Dozer is suave, sweet and energy efficient. He has learned that to come in first place you don't need to have a personal best, you just have to cut everyone else off. But don't let his peaceful speed deceive you; this does not mean he is lacking gumption.
He has a huge personality that completely endears you and leaves you wanting more. Dozer does phenomenal work with first time riders and riders with disabilities but is a fan favorite for novice friends trying to keep up. He has infinite patience and smooth and comfortable gaits. If you are riding Dozer, you have nothing to worry about! |

Mack's Lit Up
Barn Name: Mack
Date of Birth: April 9, 1999
Breed: Registered Tennessee Walking Horse
Color: Blue Roan Sabino
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.3hh
Mack is a very special player here at Painted Bar Stables. Because of his gorgeously smooth Tennessee Walker gaits and his easy to control riding habits, Mack does phenomenally with riders of all levels. While he likes kids, he definitely prefers grownups and grownups definitely prefer him, too! Easily the sexiest horse in the barn, we're not sure what planet he hails from. He's has a quirky and distinct personality that you'll never forget.
ADOPTED by Jennifer Marosek VanDusen
Mack passed away at Jen's farm under the care of a veterinarian and Jen's watchful eye after a tragic accident in the field. |

Ginger
Cat
2015
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Ginger is the little orange and white cat in the barn. He gets along with pretty much everyone and likes people a lot. He got his name because the teenagers in the barn swore he was a girl for months - glad I checked before getting him neutered! |
|

Jezebel now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with Caroline. |

Sock It To You
"Pretty"
APHA Paint Bay Overo Mare
1991, 15.1hh
Pretty is one special girl. Before she found her home here at Painted Bar Stables, Pretty was a gymkhana and barrel horse winning state championships. However, Pretty lost vision in her right eye due to a leptosporosis infection and also has Cushing's Disease. In 2011 her other eye slowly went blind leaving her completely without vision. But that didn't slow her down a bit. She's still rode and guided the trails as Erika's favorite horse in the barn.
She also had a very important job of keeping the stallion, Sierra company. The disease that left her blind also caused her to become infertile making her the perfect best friend for the guy!
Pretty died in 2013 and we miss her terribly every day. |

She was sold to Katie Steigerwalt. |
|
Elmer Fudd
"Elmo"
Appaloosa Red Roan Gelding
1998, 15.3hh
Nothing phases Elmo. We often joke that as long as you let Elmo be your friend, he'd do anything you ask. He's full of heart and is a consistent personality in our barn. He prefers trail rides to working in the arena, but you'd be surprised at what he can do when it comes to the show ring.
Elmo came to use very underweight and with terrible hoof issues and laminits. While he has gained a bit of weight, he is carbohydrate intolerant so it has been a slow process. His feet are now better but he still does long trail rides with his special "sneakers"on just in case. |

Candy does most of her work in the arena for lessons. She loves working with advanced beginners and intermediate riders and is incredibly responsive. Candy is actually the oldest horse of the bunch but you wouldn't know it. While gentle and kind she is fast and full of life. She's one of our favorites for barrel racing. |

Bubba
Quarter Horse Caramel Palomino Gelding
1992-2009, 15.2hh
I wish I had another picture of Bubba in the summer with his sleek and shinny coat. Bubba was an incredibly beautiful and elegant Palomino Quarter horse with a thick and flowing mane and tail.
Bubba sadly passed away in 2009. |
