Bachelor Foolish Blonde
"Dutchess"
APHA Solid Paint Palomino Mare
1999, 15.3hh
Dutchess is our Alpha mare. As a result she likes to either be in the very front leading the way or in the very back making sure no horse is left behind. She doesn't take any funny business and doesn't give any back. She just loves going on long trail rides. You'll notice that before each trail ride she get's a bit antsy - she's just ready to get to work! And once she gets underway she settles down into pace and can go all day.
Dutch is also a fantastic and willing lesson horse, teaching children and adults how to ride beautifully in both English and Western styles. |
 |
Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside
"Beau" or "BoBo"
Quarter Horse-cross Red Roan Gelding
2001, 16.1hh
Beau is our "lover boy." He always has a crush on some mare in our stables. He's also a real ham to riders as well. He's got quite the collection of teenage girls that ogle over him on a daily basis.
Beau has an exceptionally graceful slow trot; smooth and graceful he truly knows how to prance. He has helped many people find their balance through bareback lessons, his specialty.
Because he's a big boy usually our adults use him for trail rides, but don't let his size deceive you. Some of our kid riders take their lessons on this handsome guy. |

Cats D9 Dozer
"Dozer"
Kentucky Mountain Horse Chestnut Gelding
2001, 15.1hh
Dozer is suave and sweet, but often lazy and always hungry. But don't let his peaceful speed deceive you; slow does not mean lacking gumption. He has a huge personality that completely consumes you and leaves you wanting more. Dozer does phenomenal work with first time riders and riders with disabilities. He has infinite patience and smooth and comfortable gaits. If you are riding Dozer, you have nothing to worry about! |

Double My Scotch
"Scotch"
APHA Paint Red Dun Tobiano Mare
April 14 2004, 14.1hh
Scotch is a bubbly little squirt. She's adorable and sweet with a mind of her own and enough personality to fill the whole barn. Calm and unwavering, Scotch can conquer anything. She loves working with children and adults equally and never fails to surprise us.
Scotch is gave birth to a gorgeous palomino red dun foal in June 2010 by JKGS Awesome Desmond named Double Awesome Pixie Dust, now owned by Katie Steigerwalt. |
 |
Gringolet des Étoile Solitaire
"Gringo"
Percheron black/gray? Gelding
2009, still growing and going to be huge
Gringo is big, lovable and totally endearing. He gets along with every horse and makes friends easily. He usually gets himself into sticky situations but never seems to get hurt. He's happy, lucky and happy-go-lucky to boot!
Gringo is a very special boy and is lucky to have a large family of "god parents" who rescued him from a slaughter auction. Without Greg and Petra Tremblay, we would not have Gringo here at this farm. |
 |
JKGS Awesome Desmond
"Kasper"
APHA Paint Cremello Overo Gelding
2007, 15.2hh
Kasper is our funky little dude, with an in-your-face lovability that's hard to avoid. All he wants to do is have fun with his friends, both horse and human.
Even though Kasper is still young, he has proven himself to be a remarkably easy ride and has already started taking beginner and novice clients out on rides. He loves kids and tries hard to please his rider. |

Maximum Review
"Maxie"
APHA Paint Sorrel Tobiano Overo Mare
March 1 1998, 15.3hh
Maxie is one of our most valuable players, here at the barn. A flashy looking girl, she is a great lesson and unwavering trail horse. She does everything whole-heartedly, whether it is rough terrain trail riding or jumping over fences.
Though she is great with beginners, she is one of the fastest horses in our barns. The only thing she requires is trust: let her do her job and she will take you anywhere. She is especially good with women and children.
Maxie is gave birth to a flashy tobiano overo foal that looked just like her in June 2010 by JKGS Awesome Desmond. She is due again in June 2012. |

Mack's Lit Up
"Mack"
Tennessee Walker Blue Roan Sabino Gelding
2001, 15.3hh
Mack is a very special player here at Painted Bar Stables. Because of his gorgeously smooth Tennessee Walker gaits and his easy to control riding habits, Mack does phenomenally with hesitant or controlling riders, specifically men. While he likes kids, he definitely prefers grownups and grownups definitely prefer him, too! Easily the sexiest horse in the barn, we're not sure what planet he hails from. He's our little foreign exchange student with a quirky and distinct personality that you'll never forget. |
 |
Pepsi Poco LeoDandy
"Pepsi"
APHA Paint Black Tobiano Mare
September 1 1998, 14.3hh
Little Pepsi used to be a pro-mama because of her great Pepsi Poco bloodlines but now is Erika's go-to-girl. Pepsi is the one that first time riders, small kids and fearful individuals usually get to ride. She is tolerant, sweet and even tempered.
We often joke that Pepsi is our "Eeyore." She has an "if it's going to happen, it's going to happen to me" demeanor and has absolutely no sense of humor. However, don't let looks deceive you: real rivers run deep. Underneath her tolerant and stone-like shell is a very sensitive, feminine and independent lady waiting for you to meet her.
In June 2009, Pepsi gave birth to a palomino tobiano colt, Sierra Mist PocoTwist, who you can see at our farm starting to guide trails.

Sierras All The Gold
"Sierra"
APHA
Paint Perlino Tobiano Stallion
2002, 15.2hh
Sierra is our stallion, and he's quite a stud. A beautiful man with a peaceful temperament and calm demeanor, Sierra is a fast learner and a hard worker. He seems to pass his great personality onto his offspring, not to mention his light color!
Prior to being owned by Erika, Sierra trekked through the mountains of Colorado. While there, he cleanly broke his navicular bone in his front hoof. While it will never heal enough for him to run barrels or jump, he's getting better every day and has been lameness free since November 2009. He is truly happy to return to work again and who knows, maybe someday this fearless stallion will again guide the trails of Burdett. |

Sierra Mist PocoTwist
"Mister"
APHA Paint Palomino Tobiano Gelding
June 15, 2009, Still growing... should reach 15.1hh
Mister Man is the little man on campus. But don't let his youth and little size fool you, even big Beauregard follows him around like a little puppy. He's a really easy guy to work with. Just like his momma, nothing seems to phase him and he has his daddy's gentile and kind soul. We think he's going to be one flashy children's show horse when he gets big. |
 |
Sock It To You
"Pretty"
APHA Paint Bay Overo Mare
1991, 15.1hh
Pretty is one special girl. Before she found her home here at Painted Bar Stables, Pretty was a gymkhana and barrel horse winning state championships. However, Pretty lost vision in her right eye due to a leptosporosis infection and also has Cushing's Disease. In 2011 her other eye slowly went blind leaving her completely without vision. But that hasn't slowed her down a bit. She's still riding and guiding the trails as Erika's favorite horse in the barn.
She also has a very important job of keeping the stallion, Sierra company. The disease that left her blind also caused her to become infertile making her the perfect best friend for the guy! |
 |
Yo Secos Kid
"Chico"
APHA Paint Fleabitten Gray Overo
May 16, 2001, 15.2hh
We got this big handsome guy from Cornell University after he just didn't fit into their English Jumping program. Turns out he's Western through and through, even though he doesn't mind a good jump every now and then. Solid as a rock and built like a tank, he is steady, sweet, and level headed. He's as chill as a cucumber, but with personality to boot!

Ding and Dong are our playful, entertaining and adventurous cat duo. Usually more popular with the kids than our horses, Ding and Dong are sure to amuse. |

Minx
Cat
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Minx was given to us as a Tompkins County SPCA reject. They claimed that she was too mean to adopt out. Well, they could have fooled me! In our barn she is incredibly loving and affectionate. She is an independent mouser and wonderful companion to all. |

Seneca
Dog - Beagle Bluetick Hound mix
2009
Owned by Erika Eckstrom
Seneca is Erika's beagle dog. "Super Sen" is usually the first thing you hear when you come to our stables because she likes to make sure everyone knows you have arrived. Though she's got a great beagle howl, she's actually very shy and timid. She's a bit skeptical of new people and it takes a bit of time for her to warm up, so she'll probably avoid you and keep a good 20' buffer between herself and anyone new. That said, she is super sweet, really cuddly and absolutely playful. She is Erika's perfect sidekick, acting like a satellite orbiting around her as Erika does chores, guides rides, and even sits at the computer editing this website. |
 |
Sparky
Cat
2009
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Sparky is one of our original cats. The son of our former cat, Scrappy, he inherited a beautiful "mew" complete with vibrato. He is a great guy, but more importantly
a great role model to the other cats in the barn. He is a superb mouser. We have witnessed him catch a starling clean out of the air as he jumped from rafter to rafter in the barn. He is incredibly friendly and affectionate but he comes to you on his own terms. |
 |
Ying & Yang
Cats
2011
Owned by Everyone in the Barn
Ying and Yang are our youngest kitten duo. Ying is our little calico dude, and Yang is his black brother. You'll probably see Ying clinging to his best friend Dong, and Yang climbing to extreme heights in the barn. |

Little Joe
Paint/Thoroughbred Bay Frame Overo Gelding
2000, 16hh
Owned by Walter Montgomery
Little Joe is a magnificent man with smooth gaits and flawless riding manners. Used previously as a polo referee horse and an equitation team jumper near Manhattan, Little Joe is now living the country life out here on trails with us. That said, in 2011 he did get the opportunity to partake in Polo once again,!
Slow and steady is the name of the game but when you ask for it, he'll do anything. Whether it is jumping 3'+ fences, flying lead changes, or barrel racing he always impresses us. On the trail he is an independent and unflappable trail horse with little drama under saddle.
Little Joe is picky about how he is tacked up and dealt with on the ground (he's got an issue with claustrophobia) so be sure to ask for help with him. |

Misty Belle
Pinto/Paso Fino Black Tobiano Overo Mare
2005, 14.2hh
Owned by Sylvia Cadwell
Misty Belle a completely broke mare with a personality all her own. She came to Sylvia under weight, with little muscle tone and out of shape. After the special menu, planned by Erika at Painted Bar Stables, along with conditioning and trail riding by Sylvia, she has grown into a beautiful, responsive pony. She needs nothing more than a bitless hackamore to guide her through the trails. She's a very smooth ride as she is part Paso Fino. She is used for lessons for children and can be ridden by small adults under 150lbs. |
 |
Princess
Quarter Horse Bay Mare
1995
Owned by Bryce Miller and Terry Van Horn
Princess was trained as a western pleasure horse and is one of the sweetest horses at Painted Bar Stables. Sometimes we realize that she is trained too well for her own good when riders realize how much she can do, except move quickly. Her trot can match the pace of other horses' walk and she can easily canter behind a horse trotting. Her extremely smooth gaits makes her a wonderful horse for riders just beginning to learn how to canter. She loves to be pampered by Bryce and Terry, and in many cases truly acts like the princess she thinks she is.

Sometimes we need to part with some of our friends. Here are horses we have loved in the Past!

Moonlight Scandal
"Moon"
APHA Solid Paint Cremello Filly
June 26 2010
Moon is a well bred pretty little cremello baby with bright blue eyes out of one of my favorite Western mares, Dutchess. She is going to be a tall and leggy youngster with classy looks and her flashy color will turn heads.
Moon was sold to Louise Schroeder. |

Skip Me Awesome Cupid
"Cupid"
APHA Paint Palomino Tobiano Overo Colt
June 6 2010
Cupid was born at 7:00am on June 6. He is now a handsome and strapping baby boy. Cupid is ALL legs. He's speedy, fast, and very very alert.
He is a palomino tobiano overo. This means that he is both a dilute and carries both types of pinto colorations. He looks like a palomino carbon copy of mom! We named him Cupid because of the heart shape on his back. His official name is "Skip Me Awesome Cupid."
You can see a movie of cupid on YouTube.
Cupid was sold to Janey Schweizer. |
 |
Double Awesome Pixie Dust
"Pixie"
APHA Solid Paint Palomino Dun Filly
May 29, 2010
Born on May 29, 2010 to our mare Scotch, Pixie is one of the spunkiest and smartest little mares I have ever seen. A quick learner and easy to work with demeanor, she will go far in life!
She was sold to Katie Steigerwalt. |
 |
Elmer Fudd
"Elmo"
Appaloosa Red Roan Gelding
1998, 15.3hh
Nothing phases Elmo. We often joke that as long as you let Elmo be your friend, he'd do anything you ask. He's full of heart and is a consistent personality in our barn. He prefers trail rides to working in the arena, but you'd be surprised at what he can do when it comes to the show ring.
Elmo came to use very underweight and with terrible hoof issues and laminits. While he has gained a bit of weight, he is carbohydrate intolerant so it has been a slow process. His feet are now better but he still does long trail rides with his special "sneakers"on just in case. |
 |
Mia Stella
"Mia"
Standardbred Bay Mare
1991, 15.2hh
A former rescue, Mia's had a long hard path. Perhaps that's what accounts for the wisdom in her eyes and the kindness of her soul. With Mia, it's all about trust. When she trusts you she will be your best friend forever.
Mia was sold to Deb Belles. |
 |
Candy Cane
"Candy"
Thoroughbred-cross Bay Mare
1989, 15.2hh
Candy does most of her work in the arena for lessons. She loves working with advanced beginners and intermediate riders and is incredibly responsive. Candy is actually the oldest horse of the bunch but you wouldn't know it. While gentle and kind she is fast and full of life. She's one of our favorites for barrel racing. |
 |
Bubba
Quarter Horse Caramel Palomino Gelding
1992-2009, 15.2hh
I wish I had another picture of Bubba in the summer with his sleek and shinny coat. Bubba was an incredibly beautiful and elegant Palomino Quarter horse with a thick and flowing mane and tail.
Bubba sadly passed away in 2009. |
